The Kashalot class submarine were described by the Soviet Union as designed for “ocean engineering and research” which would have probably meant covert and more strategic operations.
Constructed during the late 1970s and early 1980s they were built as the quintessential high stealth submarine at the height of the Cold War.
Built for speed and performance at great depths the titanium hulled Kashalot could operate at an incredible 1000m below sea level.
It was capable of military diver deployment as it did not feature torpedo turrets and was manned by 36 officers and crew
